REVIEW: Midnight Crossroad (#1) - Charlaine Harris

Midnight Crossroad (#1) - Charlaine Harris
Series: Midnight Texas
Publisher: Orion Publishing Co
Format: Paperback
Rating: 3/5 (liked it) ★★★

Blurb from Goodreads:

From Charlaine Harris, the bestselling author who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, comes a darker locale - populated by more strangers than friends. But then, that’s how the locals prefer it...

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth...

Thoughts:

I did like this book, I found that the world building Charlaine Harris did was quite good, you realise that this is a small town and everyone knows everyone.

With the amount of characters in this story you would assume that it would be confusing as to who is who, but Harris makes it easy to distinguish between characters.
I loved Fiji and thought she was such a sweet character who tries to fit in but doesn't feel like she does (hand's up who hasn't felt like that). I also loved Bobo and even though there was a bit of unrequited love on Fiji's side, I really am shipping this couple, and hope that this comes to pass in the next two books in the series.

I will admit that the murder of Aubrey, doesn't feel like the main theme of the story, it is still there in the narrative, but not as prominent as you would assume. I honestly didn't see the twist coming at the end regarding the person responsible for Aubrey's death, that was very unpredictable (which is always a good thing when it comes to a whodunit).

Overall I did like this book but it just didn't manage to gain that 4th star as I did expect a bit more from this then it delivered.

Will I read the next book in the series? Yes I will
