It's a few months since Kellen left his people behind. Now aged sixteen, Kellen is an outlaw, relying on his wits to keep him alive in the land of the Seven Sands. He misses home, he misses family and more than anything, he misses Nephenia, the girl he left behind.

Then he meets Seneira, a blindfolded girl who isn't blind, and who carries a secret that's all too familiar to Kellen. Kellen and Ferius resolve to help - but the stakes are far higher than they realise. A Shadowblack plague is taking hold - and Kellen can't help but suspect his own people may even be behind it.

Thoughts

We follow Kellen, Reichis, and Ferius as they travel, and Kellen tries to learn the Argosi way, as well as avoiding bounty hunters. While being attacked by bounty hunters one night, they meet Seneira.

I found myself loving this book as much as I did Spellslinger, it still had the one-liners, and the friendship between Kellan and Reichis is just fantastic. I found myself laughing out loud through the majority of this book.

It was great to learn more about Ferius and the Argosi way, as well as meet another Argosi. I also found that Kellan really did grow more as a character in this book, and seemed to grow more into his own.

When Kellan learns that the Shadowblack could be cured, you really feel for him and hope that this is something that will help him, but when you find out the twist I just felt so much anger at the character getting Kellen's hopes up.

The writing again is just fantastic and flows so well, even with the magic system, and entering a new area of the world that de Castell has created, I still found that the book flowed so well, and I just ended up devouring this book.

Overall, a fantastic book, and I have Charmcaster down on my January TBR, so watch out for that next month.
