In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.
When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.
Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again
Thoughts
I was unsure as to what to expect with this book, but I found it to be quite enjoyable and the premise of the story to be different.
It made a change not to see vampires within supernatural YA, and that it was based on Revenants who self-sacrificed themselves in their original lives and reawakened to help people, so essentially were immortal.
The premise of the story was easy to follow, and the characters were well written, and had some fantastic back stories, I found the majority of the revenants back stories so sad, they really pulled the heart strings.
I loved the relationship between Kate and Vincent, I found it to be slow going (which isn't a bad thing, especially with YA), and just very sweet and well thought out.
I found Kate to be very believable as a character, especially when she found out about Vincent's true nature, she didn't just accept it, she handled it like any normal person would, she needed space and time away from Vincent to work through it an accept it (which in a YA setting I thought was fantastic).
Overall a really good book and I will be reading the sequel in the near future, so keep your eyes posted for the review.
