This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.

Thoughts

I found this story intriguing with its premise, here is Mare Barrow, a thief who is trying to save her friend from being conscripted into the army and ends up finding herself working in the palace where she finds out she has powers just like the silver bloods.

I found this story to be quite good, I liked the premise that here is this girl who has had to thieve to get by and she finds out she is just like the silver bloods, and has the power to control lightning.

I found Mare to start to be a very selfish character, but once she started to learn who, and what she really was she started to become more of a likeable character. I also did like Cal, he was a quiet character but he was brought across as an understanding person, that really wanted to help people.

I really like the underlying attraction between Mare and Cal, it wasn't too in your face and was a slow burn. It was just the right type of flow to it, you didn't have that insta-love which can has become prevalent in a lot of YA stories.

Overall a good start to the series, I can't wait to see what happens next to Mare and Cal, especially after that ending.
