As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions.

One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin.

But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Thoughts

The story focuses on Kestrel and what happens when she purchases Arin at a slave auction.

I really enjoyed this story, and found that it reminded me of the Roman Empire, with the Emperor and the conquering army.

I found the world building to be set a good pace, not too slow where you get so bored that you really don't want to carry on.
The writing was fantastic and the story flowed really well, and the relationship between Kestrel and Arin was written so well, it was built upon mutual understanding and respect between them rather then instalove.

I loved Kestrel she was such a brilliant character, she was smart as she was cunning, and Arin was just fantastic, you really feel for these two characters, and you really want them to be together.

Overall a fantastic book, and such a great opener to this series.
