Goodreads Blurb

When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back.

Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry.

Thoughts

With the success of the movie adaptation, I thought that I would grab the audiobook and see what the hype was about, and boy they were they right.

I was surprised by how much I really enjoyed this book and the characters and found it to be so gripping and funny in places.

I loved Rachel, you really feel for her as she is thrown into this lifestyle without knowing anything about it, and when it starts to get personal you really do want to fight her corner.
I also found myself liking Astrid as a character, and again you feel for everything that she is going through, especially in her marriage (and I do hope she ends up with her ex-boyfriend, her husband is an arse).

I found that the story was well paced and flowed really well. You do follow Rachel the majority of the time but there are chapters that follow other characters within the story. I found that the changes between chapters and the characters were done well, and this was down to the narrator.

I loved Lynn Chen as narrator, she did such a fantastic job bring these characters to life and kept a great pace with the story.

Overall, such a great book, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
