When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card. There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.
As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.
Thoughts
I will admit I watched the TV show before I read the book (don't pelt me with rotten fruit), I'm not normally one for hyped books, but I loved the tv series and really wanted to read the book (especially when I found out that there is a sequel).I found Joe to be such a creepy character, we follow his thoughts and they are so disturbing how much he believes he loves Beck and that they are meant to be together. On the outside, to everyone else, he seems like such a stable character, and if the reader wasn't actually inside his head you would believe that he was such a nice guy.
I found the story flowed well, and Joe really grew to be such a three-dimensional character, as a character he also makes you think about what you share on social media, and it weirds you out how easy it is to find the information that he finds out about Beck.
I loved the story, you are pulled in from start to finish, and in a way when they are together you do like them as a couple, but the problem is for Joe that Beck is human, and in layman's terms is just a mess, she has issues that she needs to work through, and Joe just doesn't seem to realise that and does not know how to move on.
Overall, this is such a great book, and the characters are fantastic, I am currently reading Hidden Bodies and hope to finish it soon.
