Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised. With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.
Thoughts
There has been a load of hype surrounding this book, and with the movie adaptation already been and gone at the cinemas, I thought it was high time that I picked it up and with my subscription to Audible, I thought I would try the audiobook. The story revolves around Simon, and his email relationship with Blue, someone that goes to Simon's school but has not come out to his friends or family, so is wanting to stay anonymous. Following an email received from Blue, a classmate of Simon's spots the email and starts to blackmail him
I found myself really enjoying the book and found that I really loved the relationship between Simon and Blue, I was hoping that by the end of the book that Blue's identity would be revealed (and it was), and that Simon and Blue could work on a real relationship together.
I really was NOT disappointed by this, and really enjoyed the narrator and the enthusiasm that he brought to the story.
