Goodreads Blurb

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

Thoughts

The start of this story is slow, but that is because there is a lot of world building. and again there is a new magic system, and you are also introduced to Downworlders.

What I loved the most about this is the relationship between Alec and Magnus, I thought this relationship was so brilliant portrayed. Here you have Magnus who doesn't label his relationships, and Alec who is fighting who he is. He loves Jace but here is Magnus showing him some attention, by the end of the book I was wanting more of these two characters.

I did find the relationship between Jace and Clary to be predictable, even though the twist at the end I wasn't expecting so this did reduce some of the predictability of the story. I also found the friendship between Clary and Simon to be predictable, you knew Simon was going to be secretly in love with Clary.

I did love the world building in this story, you were really thrown into the Shadowhunter world and brought into all the weapons, and runes that they used.

Overall a really good start to the series, and I can't wait to read more (watch out for the rest of the series reviews, coming soon)
