After serving out a year of hard labour in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her, her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her ... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead ... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Thoughts

The series is a loose retelling on the Cinderella story (I see some elements but if I hadn't read that I really wouldn't have connected it).

Celaena Sardothien is toiling away in the mines of Endovier when she is picked up by Chaol Westfall and the Crown Prince Dorian, to become a player in a tournament that the King is holding and will represent the Prince as his champion.

I found Celaena to be a fantastic character, she was strong willed and she was able. The story didn't make her a weakling, she was a strong female character (which is what the world is crying out for at the moment).

I loved the friendships that she made with Chaol, and Dorian. I especially loved the friendship that she made with  Nehemia Ytger, this was also a strong female character that was fighting for her country.

Within the story, you have two different storylines going on (three if you want to be techincal), you have the assassin's tournament, Celaena's discovery of the Wyrdmarks, and the story of Aelin Galythanus.

With these storylines they did blend really well together and the narrative did flow quite smoothly so you weren't left wondering what was going on, and if you had missed something.

Overall a great start to the series, and one that I am happy to continue on with.
