Goodreads Blurb

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying experiences that others in her hometown of Salem take for granted, which is why she is determined to enjoy her first high school party with her best friend and longtime crush, Tristan. But after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class, Lily wishes she could just disappear.

Suddenly, Lily is in a different Salem—one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruelest of them all is Lillian . . . Lily's other self in this alternate universe.

What makes Lily weak at home is what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. In this confusing world, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can't hope to shoulder alone and a love she never expected.

Thoughts

I was quite surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this book, I went in not knowing too much about the series, and yes I mainly picked this up because that cover is absolutely gorgeous,

The world building in this was fabulous, sometimes world building can be so slow and ends up taking you ages before you actually get to the grittier part of the story, whereas all of this story was fantastic. The narrative just flowed so well and just pulled me in.

I loved the idea of Lily being transported to an alternative Salem, where her alternate self was the leader, and ruled New Salem with an iron fist.

I found myself liking Rowan, he started out as a rebel trying to fight against Lillian's regime, and mistaking Lily for Lillian, but when he did finally realise who she was he became more kind towards her.

Overall a really good book, and I have the rest of the series on my shelf, which I do need to get to.
